Bakery Square, a cozy gem in the
Historic District, is located on
Back Street, fittingly named as it is
situated behind Main Street.

Surrounded by charming Danish West Indian buildings, this inviting courtyard offers downtown shoppers a uniquely quaint and memorable shopping experience. Marvel at the beautifully detailed archways and discover a classic old-fashioned kitchen fireplace, a relic from the early 1800s where the original owners once baked bread for the island’s residents.

History of Bakery Square. Nestled between Back Street and Nye Gade, Bakery Square has a rich history anchored by the iconic Lockhart’s Bakery, which thrived until the early 70s. The complex fell into disrepair until Topa Properties purchased it in 2003 and initiated a remarkable transformation. Collaborating with the Historic Preservation Commission and architect Tracy Roberts, Topa restored the historic charm and architectural splendor. Key efforts included removing a non-original second story and recreating intricate original details. Today, the rejuvenated Bakery Square features a central courtyard with royal palms and an operational old Dutch oven, inviting visitors to experience its timeless allure.
