History of Palm Passage. In the early 1800s, St. Thomas became a key shipping hub, with Palm Passage aiding in unloading goods like sugar and rum. The original stone archways, designed for horse-drawn carts, still exist. The Coaling Ladies were known for moving coal barefoot, and the architecture of the building facilitated efficient movement of goods. Changes in the late 1800s, like steamships and hurricanes, reshaped the port. By 1885, animal carts were replaced by automobiles. In the 1960s, tourism led to Palm Passage's expansion, adding retail spaces and offices. Today, it remains a vital part of St. Thomas's retail and dining scene, preserving its historic charm.
